Requirements To Enroll In Assisted Living Manager Course

Age and Education Qualifications

The individual must be 21 years old and possess a high school diploma, a high school equivalency diploma, or other appropriate education and have experience to conduct the necessary responsibilities.

Health and Safety Requirements

Applicants must provide evidence of being free from communicable tuberculosis and proof of immunity to MMR and Varicella. Additionally, a criminal background check must be completed within one month prior to employment to ensure no history of behavior harmful to residents.

Level 3 Program Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: a 4-year college degree; two years of healthcare experience plus one year as an assisted living manager; or two years of healthcare experience plus completion of the 80-hour training program. 

Verifiable Knowledge and Skills

Training covers resident health and psychosocial needs, assessments, and service plans. It includes assisting with hygiene, dressing, feeding, toileting, and ambulation, plus cuing, coaching, and monitoring medication self-administration while protecting resident rights.

Mandatory Certifications and Annual Training

Managers must receive initial and regular recertification in basic first aid and CPR from a certified instructor. They are also required to complete annual training in fire and life safety, infection control (standard precautions), emergency disaster plans, and basic food safety.

Who Must Take This Assisted Living Manager Course?

All managers who work in a facility licensed to five beds or more shall successfully attend an approved 80 hour training course except those who were employed as assisted living managers in the state of Maryland during one year before January 1, 2006 as per COMAR 10.07.14.15-1 E(3). Moreover, the managers must also undertake 20 hours of approved OHCQ continuing education every two years. 

Assisted Living Manager Maryland Rules & Renewals

Individuals who served as assisted living managers in Maryland for one year prior to January 1, 2006, are exempt from the 80-hour course requirement under COMAR 10.07.14.15-1 E(3). To maintain active certification, all managers must complete 20 hours of continuing education approved by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene every two years.
